KOLOA — Parts of Kauai’s north shore are cut off because heavy rains have closed roads.
The National Weather Service says leftover moisture from Tropical Depression Lane is bringing rain to Kauai on Tuesday. The service recorded nearly 18 inches in one part of Kauai during a 24-hour period ending Tuesday afternoon.
Meteorologist Matt Foster says drier air later Tuesday into Wednesday will bring some relief. Mayor Bernard Carvalho says north shore roads can reopen if rains ease on Wednesday.
The north shore is still recovering from destructive flooding in April.
Officials are urging some residents to evacuate because heavy rains are causing streams to rise. Emergency officials strongly urged some south Kauai residents to voluntarily evacuate Tuesday. A shelter is open.
